Germany: Man repeatedly stabs grandmother with scissors while trying to kidnap 3-year-old child on playground, police refuse to release suspect’s nationality

A terrifying scene unfolded at a playground on Ostafrikastraße in Hanover-Badenstedt, Germany, on Friday, May 1, 2026, when a 46-year-old man attempted to kidnap a three-year-old child and violently assaulted his grandmother with scissors. According to citizen journalist Yvonne Kussman, the police have refused to disclose the man’s nationality.

Before the attack occurred around 5:35 p.m., the 58-year-old grandmother had observed the man acting suspiciously and lurking near the playground area. Once the other families present had departed, the assailant suddenly lunged at the toddler while he was playing in the sandbox, making it clear that “his intention was to kidnap the boy from the playground”.

As the grandmother desperately fought to keep hold of her grandson, the attacker produced a pair of scissors and stabbed her repeatedly. Despite sustaining multiple cuts and puncture wounds, the woman refused to surrender the child and “managed to lie protectively over the boy on the ground” to shield him.

Neighbors who heard her screams contacted police, but they “kept their distance” until help arrived because the suspect was still “threateningly holding the scissors.”

Responding officers were forced to use “gas” to subdue the man, who was taken into custody and has since been placed in pre-trial detention.

While the young boy escaped with minor abrasions, his grandmother required professional medical care for her injuries.

Police confirmed that the attacker and the victims were total strangers and that “they did not know each other.”

Legal proceedings are now underway for dangerous bodily harm and the attempted deprivation of the liberty of a minor.

Yvonne Kussmann, a well-known citizen journalist in Germany, wrote on X:

“The police did respond to my inquiry about prior convictions and any potential previous mental breakdowns, but they refused to disclose the suspect’s nationality. This is the opposite of transparency and unnecessarily fuels rumors. In my view, the nationality should always and without exception—whether German or non-German—be disclosed, especially in cases of violent crimes in public spaces,” she wrote, while linking to her news report on the incident.

Her report indicates the Hanover Police Department stated that the suspect had no prior criminal record in Lower Saxony, noting: “Even under criminal law, no other knowledge from other federal states can be identified.”

Although tests for alcohol and drugs came back negative, the suspect’s “lack of willingness to communicate” prevented officials from determining if he was suffering from a mental health crisis.

Regarding the nationality of the suspect, the police told Kussman that they “communicate nationalities only in those cases where the act is directly related to origin. In the present case, this connection does not exist.”

The incident is very similar to a recent incident in Switzerland. In that case, an “African type” male was on the run from Swiss police after he allegedly dragged a 5-year-old child inside a playground bathroom in Basel and sexually assaulted her.

Directly before the sexual assault, he had beaten her 69-year-old female caregiver, according to the Basel public prosecutor’s office.

The man, described as “African,” fled when the door to the bathroom facility was opened, where he was found performing sexual acts on the toddler. Police and medical services arrived on the playground and treated the two injured victims. The suspect still has not been caught, and the case was censored on X, which means this post cannot be embedded — only linked — into WordPress.
