There has been an endless stream of scandals in Germany involving illegally obtained residency permits and language requirement tests, and now there is yet another case in Frankfurt involving local independent politician Ashwani Tuwari.
The 68-year-old defendant, who runs hotels, is accused of illegally aiding migrants obtain residency permits, and remarkably, he was arrested by police directly inside a district courtroom for witness intimidation.
Four witnesses have complained to the presiding judge that Tuwari had personally visited them at their homes to pressure their testimony, according to German outlet Hessischer Rundfunk. He reportedly wanted these witnesses to retract their statements.
The public prosecutor alleges Tuwari enabled individuals from India and Bangladesh to secure residency using forged leases, which enabled him to earn €22,700 across a total of nine suspected cases.
In response, the judge filed a motion for detention due to the risk of obstruction of justice, though its execution was suspended later in the session.
Tuwari has ties to the German left. He recently ran for the city council on the list of former Social Democrat (SPD) mayor Peter Feldmann, titled “Frankfurt – social!“ In Germany, much of the voting is centered around lists, which list candidates in order of importance. The number of votes a list receives determines how many individuals on the list actually make it into office, with those listed at the top receiving priority.
The defendant, who operates two hotels in the district and rents out several apartments, had promised during his candidacy to advocate for “affordable rents.”
Notably, he advocated for “qualified immigrants (who) can help address labour shortages and strengthen our economy. I support practical initiatives that enable certified professionals to work here and contribute meaningfully to our city’s growth. Through proactive and people-focused policies, we aim to make Frankfurt an attractive and inclusive city for all.”
Once the allegations against him came to light in February, Feldmann’s association distanced itself from Tuwari. A spokesman told the local portal Journal Frankfurt that the association knew nothing of the situation at the time the political list was compiled.
The list ultimately failed to enter the city council, securing just 0.4 percent of the vote in the March election.
Their top candidate, Feldmann, had previously been voted out of office as mayor in November 2022. In that referendum, 95 percent of participants voted to remove him following allegations of nepotism involving the Workers’ Welfare Association.
Europe is plagued with vast schemes involving language requirement tests, naturalizations, residency permits, fake marriages, and various legal loopholes that allow foreigners to obtain residency and later citizenship.
