The Polish Senate has rejected President Karol Nawrocki’s proposal for a nationwide referendum on the European Union’s climate policy. Earlier this month, the president submitted a motion to allow Poles to express their opinion on the EU’s Green Deal.
“Are you in favour of implementing climate policy, which has led to an increase in the cost of living of citizens, energy prices and the cost of running a business and agricultural activity?” This was the question submitted that Nawrocki wanted Poles to answer.
Yesterday, 32 MPs voted in favor of the resolution, 62 voted against, and one abstained. The absolute majority required to pass a resolution on this matter was 48 votes.
Earlier on Tuesday, the joint Senate committees for the European Union, the national economy and innovation, infrastructure, climate and environment, and agriculture and rural development also voted against holding the referendum.
“The Senate has rejected the President’s motion for a referendum on the Green Deal. This is a vote against the right of Poles to have their say on bills, jobs, and the future of our economy. You can reject the motion, but you cannot silence citizens. Poland first, Poles first,” commented Paweł Szefernaker, head of the Polish Presidential Cabinet, on the decision of the upper house.
Paweł Szefernaker, Szef Gabinetu Prezydenta RP, podczas manifestacji NSZZ „Solidarność” „Razem dla Polski i Polaków” dziękował wszystkim, którzy walczą o miejsca pracy, rozwój Polski i sprzeciwiają się Zielonemu Ładowi oraz polityce prowadzącej do osłabiania gospodarki.

Nawrocki also posted a video of Szefernaker on X, commenting: “Paweł Szefernaker, Head of the Office of the President of the Republic of Poland, during the NSZZ ‘Solidarity’ demonstration ‘Together for Poland and Poles’ thanked all those who fight for jobs, the development of Poland, and oppose the Green Deal as well as policies leading to the weakening of the economy.”
