Polish president secures more US troops for Poland in major security win as Tusk sidelined again

The United States will be sending 5,000 more troops to Poland, in a move seen as a big win for Polish President Karol Nawrocki.

“Due to the electoral success of the current President of Poland, Karol Nawrocki, whom I proudly supported, and our relationship with him, I am pleased to announce that the United States will send an additional 5,000 troops to Poland. Thank you for your attention! President DONALD J. TRUMP,” the US president wrote on Truth Social.

Nawrocki took to X to thank Trump and celebrate the strong friendship between Poland and the U.S.

“I stand and will stand guard over the Polish-American alliance – a vital pillar of security for every Polish home and all of Europe,” he wrote.

“Good alliances are those built on cooperation, mutual respect, and care for our shared security.”

The news comes in the wake of the recent announcement by Trump that the U.S. intends to remove some 5,000 American troops from Germany, with that number possibly going higher over the next year. However, Secretary of State Marco Rubio said late last week that no decisions have been made on this front as of yet.

There are currently between 35,000 and 37,000 American troops stationed in Germany.

Recently, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk was asked if he expected American soldiers withdrawing from Germany to be relocated to Poland.

“The matter is delicate. (…) I don’t think we, as a country, should ‘poach’ anything,” the prime minister declared. “I will not allow Poland to be used in any way to undermine solidarity or cooperation at the European level,” said the leader of the Civic Coalition, as quoted by Do Rzeczy.

Nawrocki is seen as critical to Polish-U.S. relations. Last September, Trump rolled out the red carpet for Nawrocki’s visit to the White House. Trump greeted him personally as he exited his vehicle, while F-35s flew overhead to celebrate the two countries’ relationship, as well as F-16s to commemorate pilot Maciej Krakowian, who had tragically just died in a crash while training for an air show in Poland.

Nawrocki’s relationship with Trump has created tensions with Tusk, as the latter has even been left out of key meetings. Now, the Polish president has secured American troops on Polish territory, with more to come, a critical win for the country’s security.
