Memorial Day in some areas was marked not by tributes but by protests against ICE. At the same time, though liberal politicians tried to summon up the Ghost of George Floyd, many Americans are over it. Martyrs and unifying rituals are impossible in a country that has fragmented, and only an uneasy and false peace prevails. American identity and power are up for grabs, and an existential conflict is upon us that only one side will win.
