After a shooting rocked the German resort island of Sylt, a 15-year-old from Azerbaijan has now been taken into custody on Friday afternoon, with photographers capturing him grinning while being placed under arrest. Another individual, a Turkish suspect, has also been arrested in connection with the crime. Police believe the shooting may have been a contract killing.
The Flensburg public prosecutor’s office strongly suspects the teenager of opening fire on a local hair salon. Following the incident, a judge issued an arrest warrant for attempted manslaughter and firearm violations, and law enforcement officials transferred the minor to a correctional facility in Lower Saxony, according to Bild newspaper.
Due to his age, he is unlikely to face any serious punishment in Germany.
The shooting occurred on Wednesday in broad daylight at the “Ocean’s Cut“ hairdresser’s shop, located on the island. Surveillance footage of the incident was captured and widely distributed on social media.

Investigators reveal that the 15-year-old was supposed to be under care at a youth facility in Lower Saxony but he had been reported missing for some time.
Police say that it is probable the teen had orders to travel to the North Sea island after being hired to kill a target. However, the individuals behind the hit have not been identified as of yet.
In an illustration of another failure of German authorities and law enforcement, it remains unclear how the minor entered Germany or obtained the firearm.
A second arrest warrant was also issued by Judge Andrea Soltau for a 23-year-old Turkish national, who currently holds only a temporary residence permit. He faces charges of aiding and abetting attempted manslaughter. While investigators are still looking into the exact motive, information indicates the shooting may stem from ongoing disputes among several local barber shop operators.
German social media users were quick to comment on yet another shooting, this time on an island many associate with a peaceful vacation getaway.
One user wrote: “Isn’t that just ‘delightful?’ Muslim clan warfare has now arrived in Sylt too. Perpetrator: 23-year-old Turk, later also a 15-year-old from Azerbaijan. And the old parties just keep watching the colorful spectacle.”
Multiple bullets were fired into the salon, but despite many of them landing in the interior, somehow nobody was injured.
DHL courier Marcel T. was working just meters away from the shooting, saying: “I was standing two or three meters away from the shooter. He ran past me, suddenly drew his weapon and fired twice. I ran straight into a doorway and the doorbell rang everywhere, I just wanted to get in somewhere.”
As he attempted to find cover, the danger multiplied: “I thought the situation was over. Then another perpetrator came from the other side. I was lucky that a woman opened the door.“
He also told Bild newspaper that he had not expected such an incident on the island, saying: “You don’t expect that here on Sylt. If the perpetrator had fired indiscriminately, I probably would have been one of the first to be hit.“
