Cop takes down alleged knife-wielding thug after train station rampage

An aboriginal man has been arrested after allegedly threatening female commuters with a knife, assaulting a good Samaritan and attacking police in a rampage at two Sydney train stations.

Video of the arrest shows the man being restrained and repeatedly punched by the arresting officer at Cabramatta Train Station on Monday evening, but NSW Police said in a statement the clip showed only an “isolated moment of the incident”.

Police said they were called to Canley Vale Train Station at about 5.10pm after reports a knife-wielding man was acting aggressively towards female commuters on the platform, and assaulted a 46-year-old man who tried to intervene.

He then allegedly boarded a train to Cabramatta Train Station where he allegedly threatened commuters, and ran from police after being spotted, but was chased down an arrested on the platform.

“During the arrest, police directed the man to show his hands multiple times, following the reports from members of the public that he was in possession of a knife,” police said.

“When the man allegedly failed to comply with that direction, the officer used an approved manoeuvre to affect the arrest.”

He then allegedly assaulted an officer while being a taken to a police vehicle, spat at an officer at Cabramatta Police Station, and assaulted police after being taken to Liverpool hospital for assessment.

Police said the man was searched but no knife was found, and police are now canvassing the rail corridor.

The man was released from hospital at 12pm on Tuesday and refused bail after being charged with 10 offences – assault occasioning actual bodily harm, assault frontline emergency worker-no actual bodily harm, hinder or resist police officer in the execution of duty, four counts of assault police officer in execution of duty without actual bodily harm, enter/leave restricted area not process ticket – adult, assault police officer in execution of duty cause actual bodily harm, wilfully interfere with comfort or safety of others.

The man, who is indigenous and has a history of violence, will face bail court on Tuesday.

The arrest footage was shared on social media by NSW Greens MP Sue Higginson, who accused the police of using excessive force.

“This is not policing, this is violence with impunity. This is not making our communities safer,” she wrote.

“This person was facedown on the ground already restrained and unarmed. This incident apparently took place at Cabramatta Train Station.”

The video emerged just days after footage of a different NSW Police officer shoving a homeless man while giving him a move-on order in Penrith sparked outrage.

Local Liberal MP Melissa McIntosh called for the incident to be reviewed, but the Police Association of NSW said the clip did not show the full context of the interaction.

“What’s not seen in the social media clip is the young homeless family that were terrified and thanked the officers,” PANSW president Kevin Morton said in a statement.

“These fine officers then from their own money bought the family a meal.”
