A 16-year-old boy with a Turkish migration background flew into a violent rage in court on Wednesday after a German-Turkish family was sentenced for the manslaughter of a 56-year-old relative during a knife attack over an inheritance dispute in Gelsenkirchen, one of the most diverse cities in Germany.
The youth, who had been found guilty of delivering the fatal knife wound, was ordered to serve seven years in juvenile detention. As soon as the sentence was announced, he leaped from his seat and yelled, “I will kill you all.”
Several court police officers immediately rushed in and removed the struggling youth from the courtroom.
While the teenager was being removed, his mother — sentenced to ten years in prison — suddenly collapsed on the courtroom floor. His sister, who received three and a half years in prison, began hyperventilating. Paramedics were called to assist both women.
The dramatic scenes unfolded shortly after the panel of judges delivered its ruling in the packed courtroom, according to German public media WDR.
The Essen Regional Court convicted the group of manslaughter and aggravated assault. The father received the stiffest penalty of twelve years behind bars. Two other male relatives were sentenced to nine and seven years respectively.
The mother was sentenced to ten years in prison, while the 16-year-old was ordered to serve seven years in juvenile detention. His sister received three and a half years in prison. The family had hoped the court would accept claims of self-defense or impose lighter penalties, but those arguments were rejected. The rulings remain subject to appeal.
Prior to the violence, the household had been marked by repeated arguments, threats, and physical confrontations tied to the inheritance disagreement.
