Spain will take on three million immigrants in legal status with their families in one year through the extraordinary regularisation process promoted by the Government. This is the opinion of senior Immigration officials, who base their calculation on the effect of the family reunifications that the 1,200,000 petitioners are expected to request. This issue worries experts in the area a lot. “For each person whose situation is regularized, at least three others are added, at least, if a reunification is requested and granted.”
In addition, the heads of the area harshly criticise Pedro Sánchez’s Executive for, they denounce, “deliberately” removing the National Police from the control of the procedures – it is their competence – to leave it in the hands of the Ministry of Migration. This decision, in their opinion, weakens the mechanisms for verifying the documentary authenticity of the people who are in the process and opens the door, they warn, to an erroneous check, for example, of criminal records. Confusion about who was going to be in charge of processing the files has been a constant throughout the process. The intervention of the Immigration brigades is therefore reduced, the same sources reveal, to merely administrative tasks. “The Police will limit themselves to documenting the cards validated by Immigration.”

The General Commissariat for Foreigners and Borders of the National Police warned from the beginning of the scenario that the central executive put in front of it. He regretted not having received guidelines on how to deal with this structural reform, described by the Government as a “social emergency” and even wrote a forceful report in which he made clear his total distrust of the process and denied, with data, the “urgency” on which Pedro Sánchez was based.

It provided that, if the citizen claims to have requested the background certificate from his country and states that he has not received it, he can continue the procedure while the Administration tries to obtain the documentation. In this time, the agents have counted a “multitude” of cases of people who have tried to enter the process fraudulently. The Immigration Office even issued an internal alert through an official letter.
