A manhunt is underway for a vandal who damaged the Anzac War Memorial in Sydney’s Hyde Park, and police have released CCTV footage of a man who may be able to assist detectives.
NSW Police said on Friday that an investigation began after reports of malicious damage that took place at the sacred site at about 2.40pm on Thursday September 26.
“An unknown man entered the memorial and poured small amounts of an oil-like liquid onto stones throughout the structure before also pouring liquid onto a metal Anzac memorial plaque and leaving the scene,” police said.
“Despite efforts from caretakers to remove the liquid the memorial remains damaged.”

Detectives are now hoping to speak to a man seen in the area at the time who may be able to help investigators.
“The man is described as being of Caucasian appearance, believed to be aged between 40-50 years old, of a medium build, with dark hair, a beard and was last seen wearing black shorts and a black t-shirt,” police said.
The incident comes after a series of alleged vandalism attacks by far-left extremists on war memorials and Australian cultural monuments, including Captain Cook statues.
Few arrests have been made, while earlier this year Melbourne’s Yarra City Council decided to permanently remove the Captain Cook Memorial from Fitzroy’s Edinburgh Gardens after it was repeatedly vandalised by anti-Australian activists.
