Perth residents have raised concerns about a ‘queer prom’ night hosted by homosexuality advocacy groups where 12-year-old kids will mix with adults as old as 25 and watch “drag queen” performers.
The Queer Prom 2025 event will be held on November 28 at Shenton Community Centre, and is run by the Youth Pride Network, Pride WA, and the taxpayer-funded Youth Affairs Council of Western Australia.
The “cybercore” themed event will feature “drag” shows, live music and DJs, is closed to the public, alcohol and drug free, and under-16s require parental consent to attend, according to the booking website, which also contains a far-left anti-Australia slogan and “land acknowledgement”.
“Strut your style.exe, decode your identity, and celebrate the vibrant spectrum of LGBTIQA+ young people in a night of pure digital joy. From metallic mesh fits to sparkle-stacked accessories, we’re rewriting the code on what it means to celebrate with pride,” the event description reads.
But the event sparked debate after a local posted about it on social media site Reddit, writing: “I’ve never seen a socialising event age range like this – usually it’s either ‘kids and parents’ events or there are separate underage and 18+ areas.
“This one seems to be designed for 12-year-old queer children to socialise with 25-year-old queer adults. Is this the new norm? I must be well out of touch.”
Many others echoed the poster’s concerns, with one saying “12 feels too young”.
“As a 25 year old, you wouldn’t catch me dead at anything like this. There are times and places for adults and children to socialise. A prom isn’t one of them, alcohol and drug free or not,” another said.
“No kids are queer at 12. Give it a rest,” said a third.
The post was eventually deleted and locked by Reddit moderators.
