A convicted rapist from Tegel prison in Berlin has failed to return to the facility after an unaccompanied release, with police saying the man attacked his wife with a knife, resulting in serious injuries.
The fugitive, identified as the 37-year-old Mike L., was remarkably due to be released from prison next month. The former market manager had participated in several unaccompanied releases over the past few months as part of his preparation for life after incarceration.
However, during the latest release, police believe he used it as an opportunity to stab his ex-wife.
BZ reported that there had been “no problems with these releases so far.” However, he allegedly ambushed his ex-wife in Lankwitz with a knife on Saturday. While no further details have been announced, the woman was hospitalized with serious injuries, though she has since been able to leave the clinic.
In what BZ described as a perplexing development, the authorities did not publicly disclose information about either the crime or the man being on the run from authorities.
The spokeswoman for the Berlin judicial administration “did not want to comment on this on Wednesday afternoon.”
The police reportedly recorded the knife attack as “domestic violence.” This is presumably why the public was not informed.
Police spokesman Florian Nath stated, “The colleagues are investigating dangerous bodily harm. Everything else is the subject of the investigation. The man is being searched for.”
Mike L. was convicted in 2021 and sentenced to four years and nine months in prison for aggravated rape, deprivation of liberty, coercion, possession of weapons, and bodily harm. He also received an additional two years for an arson attack.
The events leading to his imprisonment involved Helena D. (then 23, whose name has been changed), an employee at the firm where L. was a marketing manager. In 2019, he began a relationship with the colleague, who was ten years his junior. The relationship was characterized by “jealousy and violence,” leading the woman to move out and obtain an emergency restraining order against him.
On April 9, 2020, L. encountered Helena D. on the street. He forced her into his car at knifepoint and drove to the island of Usedom, which is in the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. That night, he raped her in the car.
