A group of officers was viciously attacked in Berlin’s neighborhood of Spandau during a check for weapons at a shisha bar, resulting in all four officers suffering injuries and two arrests. One of the perpetrators is accused of smashing a bottle over the head of one of the officers, resulting in a serious head injury.
Police consider the bar a major meeting spot for organized crime. Media reports indicated that the operation was a part of a measure to combat gun crime.
At around 10:45 p.m., officers entered “King’s Lounge,” and found approximately 24 guests there, according to news outlet BZ.
Officers indicated they were there to check for weapons. At that point, the 45-year-old owner of the business began protesting the operation. He grew so angry that he took a bottle and allegedly smashed it over an officer’s head. Then, a 28-year-old guest inside attacked the other officers.
Three officers suffered cuts from broken glass, and both suspects were injured and arrested.
All four officers were listed as unfit for duty due to their injuries.
Despite the violence, officers managed to check the 24 people in the bar. None of them had any weapons on their person or other dangerous objects.
