Notorious paedophile dead after alleged attack by other prisoners in Queensland jail

A notorious child sex offender has died after an alleged altercation with two other inmates at a Queensland jail last week.

Shannon Daniel Norgate, 28, who was previously jailed for posing as a security guard and luring three children into toilets at a school and shopping centre in Gladstone, was pronounced dead in Hervey Bay Hospital late on Monday.

He was taken to hospital after being found unresponsive at the Maryborough Correctional Centre, and the Queensland Police Service Corrective Services Investigation Unit is understood to be looking into a violent assault, The Courier Mail reported.

Queensland Police said on Tuesday that detectives from the Homicide Investigation Unit and Maryborough Criminal Investigation Branch were taking part in the ongoing probe.

“Information indicates around 9am on Wednesday, November 26, a 28-year-old person was located unresponsive following a suspected altercation with two other prisoners,” police said in a statement.

“Police attended and declared a crime scene.

“The 28-year-old person was transported to hospital for treatment, but passed away from their injuries on Monday, December 1.”

Norgate spent just 406 days in jail for the school bathroom attack and put on three years’ probation, but in 2020 made headlines after being found living 30m from a primary school in Brisbane.

Then in 2023 he was caught grooming a 12-year-old boy and jailed for just two more years despite the judge describing him as a “true predator”.
