Donald Trump’s homeland security chief has called for a US travel ban on every country “flooding our nation with killers, leeches, and entitlement junkies”.
Kristi Noem, the so-called “ICE Barbie”, said she had urged Mr Trump to enact sweeping new travel bans during a meeting with the president on Monday.
“I just met with the president,” the former South Dakota governor wrote on X. “I am recommending a full travel ban on every damn country that’s been flooding our nation with killers, leeches, and entitlement junkies.”
She added: “Our forefathers built this nation on blood, sweat, and the unyielding love of freedom – not for foreign invaders to slaughter our heroes, suck dry our hard-earned tax dollars, or snatch the benefits owed to Americans. We don’t want them. Not one.”
Ms Noem’s comments mark the latest escalation in migration measures after Mr Trump declared he would permanently suspend all immigration from “third-world” countries after an Afghan national was accused of shooting two National Guard troops in Washington DC on Wednesday.
Both Mr Trump and the department of homeland security (DHS) then reshared her statement on their social media accounts, appearing to endorse her rhetoric.
Ms Noem, who is known for sporting Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) outfits for publicity stunts, did not specifically name any countries and no timeline was given. The DHS said it would be “announcing the list soon”.
Karoline Leavitt, the White House press secretary, told Fox News that Ms Noem had recommended that Mr Trump’s ban on “19 third-world and failed state countries around the world” should be widened to cover “more countries around the globe”. According to reports, the list could be extended to 30 to 32 countries.
‘We don’t want those people’
The Trump administration has halted the asylum process for all Afghan nationals in the country and started to review green cards granted to people from those 19 countries.
The president said that he intended to permanently pause immigration for “a long time” because “we don’t want those people”. He also said his administration’s goals were aimed at significantly reducing “illegal and disruptive populations”.
“Only REVERSE MIGRATION can fully cure this situation,” he added.
Mr Trump said he would “denaturalise migrants who undermine domestic tranquillity” and deport any foreign national deemed a public charge, security risk, or “non-compatible with Western civilisation”.
His statements were made after a Nov 26 attack on the eve of Thanksgiving, when Rahmanullah Lakanwal, 29, a former Afghan special forces soldier who emigrated to the US in 2021, opened fire on National Guard members on patrol close to the White House.
Sarah Beckstrom, 20, died from her wounds and Andrew Wolfe, 24, is still in critical condition in hospital. Both had been sworn in to guard the capital’s streets less than 24 hours before.
Last week, the US Citizenship and Immigration Services announced it would review green card holders from 19 countries of “concern” including Afghanistan, Iran, Haiti and Venezuela.
Joseph Edlow, the agency’s director, said that asylum decisions would be paused “until we can ensure that every alien is vetted and screened to the maximum degree possible”.
The countries were named in a White House proclamation published in June called “restricting the entry of foreign nationals to protect the United States from foreign terrorists and other national security and public security threats”.
