A predatory lesbian teacher has been banned for life in Queensland after grooming a high-achieving but suicidal female student, plying her with drugs and alcohol and forcing her into painful sex acts with her and her “transgender” lover.
The teacher, whose identity is suppressed by the courts in order to protect her victim, was struck off by the Queensland Civil and Administrative Tribunal earlier this month following a hearing in November where the student’s horrific year-long ordeal was detailed.
The tribunal found that the teacher, anonymised as WLR, taught former student Y (FSY) legal studies at a regional high school in 2019 and 2020 when FSY was aged 16 and 17.
FSY was elected School Captain in 2020 and was an academic high achiever but was also on suicide watch and designated as a “child at risk”, which WLR was aware of , the tribunal found.
WLR began grooming FSY in 2019 and introduced her to her girlfriend, who had been a student at a school where WLR engaged in pre-service teaching experience, was one year older than FSY, and according to the tribunal was “transitioning to a male midway through 2020 while adopting a new name”.
The tribunal found that WLR sexually touched FSY and “flirted” with her during school hours while ensuring her acts took place out of view of cameras and when there were not other teachers present, and continued despite FSY telling her she was not interested in a relationship with a female.
WLR told her about teacher-student sexual fantasies she had about the pair, and gave her a homosexual propaganda comic book called Heartstopper about “two gay boys in high school who fell in love”.
Midway through 2020, WLR and her girlfriend moved to Adelaide where she had a new teaching placement, and at the same time FSY moved out of her mother’s home and in with her brother while remaining in “constant communication” with WLR, the tribunal found.
FSY then asked the school for a few weeks off, but on the same day as staff told her it was not a good idea as final Year 12 exams were approaching, she flew to Adelaide on a ticket paid for by WLR’s girlfriend.
On arrival FSY was taken to the WLR’s address, told to give the girlfriend’s address if asked, and later that night had a panic attack when WLR’s girlfriend performed oral sex on her.
The following night, FSY, who was a virgin and still 17, was pressured into a threesome involving “penetrative sex with a toy worn by WLR’s partner”, the tribunal found.
Two days later she contacted her school, saying she was staying with a cousin but intended to fly back for her final exams, but shortly afterwards dropped out and did not complete the exams.
About a week after that, FSY’s father, mother, and sister, who were unaware she had travelled to Adelaide, filed a missing person’s report with Queensland Police, and when South Australia Police turned up at WLR’s home the teacher told them she had not seen FSY even though she was residing there.
“WLR later contacted the police to admit that FSY was in fact there. When SAPOL returned for a welfare check, WLR hid in another room while the police spoke with FSY,” the tribunal found.
The tribunal found that while living with WLR and her girlfriend, FSY engaged in sexual role play scenarios, including “incest fantasies where WLR’s partner was the ‘father’ and teacher/student fantasies where WLR was the teacher”.
“FSY stated that the partner had a ‘Daddy fetish’ and that she and WLR were the daughters. This fetish included rape scenarios including violence with FSY describing screaming in pain,” the tribunal stated.
A few months after arrival FSY was given alcohol and marijuana for the first time, and when she had a major panic attack WLR and her girlfriend “thought she was pretending”, did not take her seriously and gave her no support.
“After the commencement of alcohol and cannabis, FSY reported that WLR and her partner encouraged her to use alcohol and drugs so that the sexual conduct they wanted to engage in was not so painful. WLR and her partner were also cannabis users,” the tribunal found,
“The use of cannabis escalated, and FSY stated that she was smoking cannabis several times a day every day. WLR’s partner told FSY that he loved the fact that he had corrupted her by smoking weed and drinking alcohol. The partner’s father and brother supplied the cannabis.”
The tribunal found that throughout the entire period WLR and her girlfriend “exerted dominance” over her by not providing her with a house key, not providing her with a MetroCard, not allowing her to have visitors, insisting she lie about her age, and not posting anything on social media.
“[WLR and her girlfriend encouraged] her to accompany them to parties at their friends’ place and drink alcohol so that the partner could engage in anal sex with her and not experience so much pain,” the tribunal found.
“WLR would guilt FSY into performing sexual acts and when she responded that she was not ready for that WLR would become angry.
“FSY also reported that she was made to feel guilty of not complying with WLR’s demands for sex and felt that she may be told to leave if she did not comply. She engaged in sexual acts partially under duress for fear of being abandoned.”
During the same period FSY attempted suicide by taking a large number of pills, but WLR and her girlfriend did not take her to seek medical attention for fear that the hospital would call her mother.
WLR was working as a teacher in Adelaide throughout the entire period, the tribunal found.
In mid-2021 FSY contacted her sister, who drove to Adelaide and picked her up.
The tribunal found that FSY has since been in rehab for marijuana addiction, has been hospitalised for mental health conditions and attended several mental health providers. and is “under a care of a doctor all the time”.
“The impact on FSY has been life changing. She went from being a high-performing student and holding a senior student leadership role to dropping out of school and not 7 graduating. She returned to her hometown from Adelaide addicted to cannabis and with mental health difficulties that appear to have persisted and impacted on her ability to work and function,” the tribunal stated.
The tribunal also found that WLR showed “no insight or remorse”, or demonstrated that she she feels “any concern for the consequences of her conduct”.
“WLR has provided no evidence to the Tribunal to indicate that she has reflected upon her conduct or recognised the potential harm to the student. It is self-evident that teachers must not pursue or engage in romantic or sexual relations with students, and teachers receive explicit and ongoing training in this regard,” the tribunal found.
“The Tribunal is concerned about WLR’s apparent lack of insight and remorse. We consider that WLR provides an unacceptable risk of harm to children that is unlikely to change. Therefore we order that Teacher WLR is prohibited indefinitely from reapplying for registration or permission to teach.”
The tribunal also decided that identifying WLR, the school or the regional centre of residence “could lead to possible identification of the student and potentially may add to the harm already caused to the victim and lead to further psychological consequences”.
“We therefore consider it is in the interests of justice to make a confidentiality order prohibiting the publication of any information in these proceedings that could identify the student in any way, including by naming the teacher or school involved,” the tribunal stated.
“The Tribunal’s basis for making the confidentiality order rests solely with a concern for the victim and the interests of justice and is not in any way to be construed as a protection of Teacher WLR.”
