New Year’s Eve Sees Unprecedented Destruction and Rioting Across Europe

Exceptional levels of violence swept through Europe on New Year’s Eve, stretching the resources of law enforcement and emergency services in many major cities.

In Brussels, emergency crews were called to large numbers of outdoor fires and vehicle set ablaze, many of them linked to fireworks. Firearms were also spotted in the streets. One video on X shows hooded individuals, apparently Moroccans, carrying AKs while riding a scooter in the Belgian capital.

But it was not just Brussels where ‘celebrations’ escalated. Police spokesman Wouter Bruyns described the night in Antwerp as “extremely turbulent and dangerous” for emergency services. Police cars, ambulances and fire engines were targeted with stones, eggs and fireworks, causing damage to several vehicles. Around 100 young people were arrested, most of them under the age of 20.

In the Netherlands, disturbances linked to New Year’s Eve began early. Police deputy chief Wilbert Paulissen said in a statement that “almost all available riot police officers in the Netherlands were on duty.” Police said the impact of heavy fireworks was “downright devastating in some places.”

Violence against emergency services was reported in multiple Dutch cities. Molotov cocktails were thrown at police in the southern city of Breda. The head of the Dutch Police Union, Nine Kooiman, said she had been pelted by fireworks and other explosives while on duty in Amsterdam, calling the level of violence “unprecedented.” The Central and West Brabant Safety Region reported that violence against emergency workers had “increased dramatically.”

In Utrecht, officers in the Overvecht and Kanaleneiland neighbourhoods were “massively and almost continuously attacked by groups of young people” during the night. Heavy fireworks were used against the police. In response a water cannon had to be deployed several times. Geert Wilders, the leader of the anti-immigration PPV party commented sarcastically on X: “Who could they [the rioters] have been? Canadians?”

The German Police Union (DPolG) in Berlin said attacks on police and firefighters had taken place, stating on X that anyone who says “the night was largely peaceful” is ignoring “the numerous targeted attacks on emergency personnel.”

“Targeted firing of rockets at emergency vehicles is no trivial matter. These are attacks on the state and the people who stand up for it,” the statement added. In another post, the DPolG claimed, based on discussions with colleagues, “the perpetrators appeared to be predominantly of Arab and Turkish origin.” In the Berlin district of Wedding, the fire department was at times only able to operate under police protection.

“When the Berlin police classify a New Year’s Eve, in which police officers and emergency services were once again attacked, as ‘less problematic’ due to the lack of serious injuries, it’s a blatant admission of failure,” said Martin Hess, deputy spokesperson for AfD, the largest opposition party in Germany. Hess called out the systematic denial of the problems caused by mass immigration, saying “Instead of taking decisive action, there is downplaying, relativizing, and cover-up. For ideological reasons, the perpetrators are often concealed, and the reality is sometimes systematically ignored.”

The situation in France was no better either. Reports say 1,173 cars were set on fire in the country just in one night.

Balázs Orbán, the political director of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán highlighted the trend of violent and destructive events New Year’s Eve on X: “What happened in Berlin on New Year’s Eve is something we are increasingly witnessing on the streets of major Western European cities: a migration-based public order breakdown.”

Orbán wrote: “This wasn’t random chaos. It was the predictable result of years of mass migration, weak enforcement, and political denial.” He affirmed that “Hungarians can be certain that as long as Hungary has a national government, Hungary will not become a country of mass immigration—so they can walk their streets and enjoy the holidays freely and safely.”
