Indians deported for smuggling illegal whisky into Australia

Two Indian alcohol smugglers have had their visas cancelled and been slapped with fines after trying to sneak illicit whisky into Australia.

The pair, one on a student visa and one on a tourist visa, were caught hiding the unidentified whisky products inside beer boxes in a sea cargo container, the Australian Border Force said on Wednesday.

The ABF said investigators seized the shipment, which photos show contained cartons of Kingfisher and Haywards beer, tried to switch out the whisky while the cargo was at a facility awaiting customs clearance in July, 2025.

More search warrants were executed the following month, and the visas were cancelled in October, and the smugglers are no longer in Australia.

The ABF also issued fines totalling $29,800.

ABF Superintendent Mel Stewart warned would-be illicit alcohol importers there were significant penalties for a misdeclaration while importing goods.

“Seeking to smuggle illicit alcohol undermines the legitimate trade of Australian businesses and the integrity of systems put in place to support honest taxpayers contributing to the community,” she said.

“ABF officers are working hard every day using sophisticated targeting techniques and intelligence-led screening to catch these offenders and ensure they face the consequences of their actions.”
