An African man has been charged after allegedly punching random members of the public during a terrifying rampage in the centre of Adelaide.
South Australia Police said on Friday a 32-year-old man from Enfield was charged with disorderly behaviour and two counts of assault over the alleged incident on Grenfell Street at about 9.20pm on Thursday.
Two men in their 30s left the scene after allegedly being attacked, but later came forward to report the assaults, police said. Neither suffered serious injuries.
The attacks were witnessed by TV personality Andrew “Cosi” Costello, who called the alleged incident “terrible” in a Facebook post as he recounted seeing the shirtless man yell in people’s faces and a bus stop before allegedly punching them.
Mr Costello then congratulated the police for responding quickly and arresting the alleged attacker.
“What a terrible world when innocent people just going home to their loved ones are punched in the face for no reason. Disgusting,” he said.
“Again. Well done SAPOL!!! Fast response. Let’s hope the courts don’t just give this bloke a slap on the hand. If I was the judge he’d get ten years in jail to have a good hard think.”
He initially described the man as “of African descent about six foot and 25 years of age, with no shirt on and a backpack”, but later edited the post to remove the words “of African descent”.
