African killed three after mental health workers released him due to ‘racism’ fears

A schizophrenic African immigrant who stabbed three people to death in Britain was free to carry out his violent rampage because mental health workers feared detaining him would be racist, an inquiry has heard.

Valdo Calocane, from Guinea-Bissau, killed students Barnaby Webber and Grace O’Malley-Kumar, both 19, at the University of Nottingham before stabbing caretaker Ian Coates, 65, stealing his van and running down three pedestrians in the early hours of June 13, 2023.

He was sentenced to an indefinite hospital order in January 2024 after admitting manslaughter by diminished responsibility and attempted murder, sparking anger from victim’s families, and a public inquiry to assess the “events, acts and omissions” before the killings began its first day of hearings on Monday.

The inquiry heard Calocane tried to kick down a female neighbour’s door in 2020, scaring her so much she jumped out of a window and injured her back, hours after he was arrested and released for battering another neighbour’s door, The Times reported.

Mental health workers were “leaning towards” detaining the violent maniac after the first attack, but ultimately set him free after “the team of professionals considered the research evidence that shows over-representation of young black males in detention”, the inquiry was told.

Another professional also said Calocane’s psychosis could be dealt with in the community, but just 40 minutes later the crazed thug tried to kick down the second door.

Rachel Langdale KC, counsel to the inquiry, said: “[The victim] was alone in the flat. She was so frightened she jumped out of the first-floor window, causing serious damage to her spine.”

Calocane was put in mental health custody four times and had a history of serious violence, but was discharged in 2022 despite refusing to take his medication and doctors warning he might kill someone.

In the middle of his killing spree Calocane called his brother and said: “This will be the last time I speak to you. Take the family out of the country.”

His brother asked if he was about to do something stupid, and Calocane replied: “It is already done.”
