A 23-year-old Venezuelan migrant is accused of lying in wait outside a South Side day care center and shooting his former partner’s new boyfriend as the couple arrived to drop off a child.
Jose Montilla Carreno was ordered detained by Judge Antara Rivera on charges of attempted murder and aggravated battery in connection with the January 29 shooting in the 6300 block of South Paulina Street.
Prosecutors said the 26-year-old victim was driving a red Nissan with Montilla Carreno’s former partner in the front passenger seat and the couple’s two-year-old daughter in the back seat as they headed to the day care.
As the couple approached the day care, Montilla Carreno drove past their vehicle and then pulled in front of them on the street, prosecutors said. He allegedly stopped his car outside the facility, got out, and displayed a pistol.
When the victim saw the gun, he jumped out of his vehicle and tried to run away, Assistant State’s Attorney Jake Mallory said during Montilla Carreno’s detention hearing.
Montilla Carreno opened fire, firing multiple rounds at the fleeing man from a distance of about six to eight feet, said Mallory. One bullet struck the victim in the left shoulder. The victim managed to get inside the day care, where he waited for the police while showing the staff his injury.

The victim and the woman both identified Montilla Carreno as the gunman and told police he had threatened to shoot the victim the night before the attack.
