An Iranian migrant who fled the regime became depressed after being sent to live in Gateshead, an immigration tribunal has been told.
The 20-year-old asylum seeker told an immigration tribunal he fell into a depressive slump when he was relocated to the industrial town in the north east of England after arriving in the UK on a small boat.
He revealed that he had also been told by his family in Iran that his younger brother had been involved in an accident and was in a coma.
The Iranian disclosed that he had converted to Christianity in an effort to help improve his mental health as he sought to fight his removal from the UK after the Home Office rejected his asylum claim.
The migrant claims that he cannot return to Iran as he openly opposes the regime, including attending protests in the UK, and would face persecution if he were to be sent back.
His initial appeal against his asylum refusal was rejected by a lower-tier immigration tribunal. But he appealed and an upper tribunal judge has now decided that the case needs to be reheard because of the “significant developments” in Iran.
