Conservatives have suffered a ‘breakdown’ after Orbán loss, says Polish MP who was granted asylum in Hungary

After the landslide victory of opposition leader Péter Magyar, Marcin Romanowski, a Polish Law and Justice (PiS) MP granted political asylum in Hungary by the Fidesz government, says simply voting for change is not always a good thing. The MP also now faces extradition to Poland to face prosecution.

“This conservative wave that has been sweeping across Europe in recent months — and I hope it will continue — has suffered a certain breakdown,” the former deputy justice minister told Telewizja Republika, as quoted by Do Rzeczy. The PiS politician added that most voters might not necessarily have voted for a specific party, but simply for change.

Hungary offered Romanowski asylum in 2024, arguing that he faced politically motivated charges of corruption and misuse of public funds in Poland, marking the first time an EU member state has offered asylum to a Polish politician since the fall of communism.

“The Polish example may not have taught them enough that change for the sake of change is not good,” he said.

“I think the main conclusion from this defeat of Fidesz and the victory of the globalists is that Poland and conservative Europe have lost a very important bastion,” Romanowski continued, adding that he hoped France’s National Rally can still win next spring.

He also expressed concerns that Tisza’s party “may apply, with double force, the same level of aggression, hatred and lawlessness” that – in his opinion – “we are dealing with in Poland.”

Both Romanowski and his boss, former Minister of Justice Zbigniew Ziobro, were granted asylum by Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, the latter in January 2026. Hungary also believes the case against Ziobro, including charges of leading an organized criminal group, embezzlement, abuse of power, obstructing justice, and misusing public funds, was purely a political vendetta by Prime Minister Donald Tusk.

Now, however, the Orbán-led Fidesz party will be handing over power to the Tisza Party, led by Péter Magyar. Notably, one of the first things Magyar has said he will do is extradite both Romanowski and Ziobro back to Poland to face prosecution. However, he also said he believes they will flee to Russia or Belarus in the meantime. He also notes cryptically that “there might be someone else on the plane,” likely referencing FM Péter Szijjártó, who Magyar has vowed to investigate for treason due to his alleged illegal sharing of information with his Russian counterpart.
