A popular Pakistani restaurant in Perth has been fined $72,000 by Western Australian health authorities for nine shocking food safety standard violations.
PIND Restaurant in Belmont was convicted last month of the offences, which were detected in November last year, resulting in the hefty fine plus a costs order of $2,130.
The restaurant, which has a 4.5 star rating on Google and describes itself as a “go-to place for authentic Halal Desi food”, remains open and told The West Australian it was appealing the fine and conviction.
Inspectors from the City of Belmont found that on November 12 and/or 17, or between the two dates, PIND Restaurants failed to comply with the Food Standards Code and Food Act.
The eatery failed to store food in such a way that it was protected from the likelihood of contamination, failed to store potentially hazardous food under temperature control, and failed to provide means of effectively drying hands at hand washing facilities, a notification of conviction stated.
The notice also stated that PIND Restaurant failed to take all practicable measures to prevent pests entering the food premises, and to eradicate and prevent the harbourage of pests, and did not keep the premises ” maintained to a standard of cleanliness where there was no accumulation of food waste, dirt and grease”.
The restaurant was also found to have failed to maintain the food premises in a good state of repair.
Also in April The Kart Centre go-karting business in Canning Vale was fined $18,000, and Chinese Canton in Belmont was fined $45,000, for similar food standards breaches.
The state’s largest fine of $215,000 plus costs was given to the Metro Indian Restaurant in Subiaco in 2019 for eight breaches, and a Nandos in Willetton was fined $160,000 in 2024.
