Hungary: Magyar says all EU funds will arrive end of August, guest worker restrictions to be introduced

Prime Minister Péter Magyar has announced that all EU funds due to Hungary should be arriving by the end of August.

Calling the matter a top priority at a government meeting on Monday, Magyar indicated that he had exchanged letters with President of the European Commission (EC) Ursula von der Leyen, over the weekend, and negotiations have begun between members of the government and the leaders of the European Commission, who are staying in Budapest until Friday.

He stressed, as reported by Hirado, that they agreed with von der Leyen that “these funds belong here, in Hungary, with the Hungarian people, in the Hungarian healthcare system, the Hungarian education system, in infrastructure.”

Péter Magyar indicated that both sides would do everything they could to sign the political agreement in Brussels next week, which would allow for the closure of open issues.

According to the government’s website listing initial decisions made and actions to be taken: “The government’s goal remains to ensure that Hungary has access to all resources it is entitled to within the European Union. A European Commission delegation is in Budapest to negotiate with the Hungarian government, with the goal of reaching an early political agreement and access to EU funds by August 31.”

Government spokesperson Anita Köböl informed press after the meeting of other measures to be taken as well, including a decision on restricting foreign guest workers next week and reviewing the infamous pedophile pardon case, which led to the resignation of former President Katalin Novak and Magyar’s own wife, former Justice Minister Judit Varga.

“The government discussed the disclosure of the pardon dossier on Tuesday, the complete transformation of the execution, the actions related to asbestos pollution in Western Hungary, and the 2026 budget, among other things, at its meeting on Monday,”  the prime minister wrote on his Facebook page. He also confirmed at the press conference that the government would make the details of the pardon case public on Tuesday morning.

Regarding foreign guest workers, Köböl said the goal is to ensure that the employment of guest workers serves the interests of the Hungarian labor market, Hungarian employees and companies.

The Tisza government seeks to prevent the development of an economic model based on the mass import of foreign labor.
