Muslim taxi driver stops to pray on side of busy Perth freeway

A Muslim taxi driver has been caught illegally praying on the side of a Perth freeway, leaving locals shocked and angry.

Photos of the bizarre scene show the Islamic man praying on a mat next to his vehicle on the Mitchell Freeway at Osborne Park on Friday evening while cars zoom past.

The man’s taxi is parked in the emergency lane with the boot open, and his hazard lights do not appear to be on, and a sign metres away says there is an emergency stopping bay 1km ahead.

A furious local who witnessed the incident told Noticer News it happened at peak hour and described it as “extraordinarily dangerous, stupid and worrying”.

According to Western Australian law it is illegal to stop on a freeway or motorway except in a genuine emergency.

The unsafe act comes as the state’s road toll sits at 99 deaths so far this year, a 35% increase on the 2021-25 average of year-to-date fatalities.

The road toll is also higher to date than last year’s 87, which was a 10-year high.

There were 184 road deaths in Western Australia in 2025, four lower than a year earlier but the higher than any other year since 2016.
