Far-left MP Zarah Sultana has announced her resignation from the U.K. Labour Party and revealed plans to form a new political party alongside former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn.
Sultana, who was stripped of the Labour whip last year, said the new party would bring together independent MPs, campaigners, and activists to take on what she described as a “broken” Westminster system.
“Today, after 14 years, I’m resigning from the Labour Party,” she declared in a statement. “Jeremy Corbyn and I will co-lead the founding of a new party, with other Independent MPs, campaigners, and activists across the country.”
She accused both Labour and the Conservatives of overseeing “managed decline and broken promises” and vowed to keep fighting on issues such as poverty and Gaza. In her statement, Sultana warned that the country faces a political choice at the next general election, saying, “In 2029, the choice will be stark: socialism or barbarism.”

Sultana also accused the government of “active participation in genocide” in the Middle East and called on others to join her movement, writing, “Billionaires already have three parties fighting for them. It’s time the rest of us had one.”
Corbyn has not yet commented on Sultana’s announcement, but during an appearance on ITV’s Peston on Wednesday night, he strongly hinted that such a move was imminent. “There is a thirst for an alternative,” he said. “There will be a grouping that will come together.” He added that the new movement would be based on “peace rather than war.”
Corbyn, who was expelled from Labour in 2024 following years of tensions over his handling of anti-Semitism allegations and his foreign policy stances, previously formed a parliamentary alliance with four other pro-Gaza independent MPs Shockat Adam, Ayoub Khan, Adnan Hussain, and Iqbal Mohamed. All five won their seats in July’s election after defeating Labour candidates in constituencies with large Muslim populations.
It remains unclear whether these MPs will formally join the new party, but their inclusion is widely anticipated.
The announcement presents a fresh headache for Labour leader Keir Starmer, who already faces political challenges from both sides. With Nigel Farage’s Reform UK party leading in the polls, the new far-left party threatens to split Labour’s vote further.
According to Sky News, two senior Labour MPs have already suggested that Starmer may be forced to resign if Labour performs poorly in next May’s elections in Wales, Scotland, and London.
Commenting on the news, Reform UK leader Nigel Farage posted on X, “If you thought Keir Starmer was having a bad week, it just got a whole lot worse.”
