Belgium: Kosovar man sets wife on fire in front of children during domestic dispute in Helchteren

A man with a migration background allegedly doused his wife with an accelerant and set her on fire during a domestic dispute in the Belgian village of Helchteren on Thursday.

The man then fled the scene, and police are still searching for him, according to Het Belang van Limburg.

The horrific attack took place in the presence of the couple’s children, who reportedly tried to intervene. Emergency services were initially called to the house on Kazernelaan for a fire alarm, but upon arrival, screens were quickly placed around the property as the severity of the situation became clear.

A mobile medical emergency team provided first aid to the woman, who was rushed to the hospital under police escort. Her condition is understood to be critical, and she is being treated at the burn unit.

A neighbor told the Belgian news outlet that police had visited the house previously on multiple occasions. According to the neighbor, police were already at the house around 11 a.m. on Thursday, hours before the incident.

“I didn’t see any smoke, but suddenly there were many fire engines,” they said. “That couple, with a migration background, certainly has four or five children. The fire department put a baby and another little boy in the car with family members.”

De Telegraaf reported that the couple originates from Kosovo and has three children. They are understood to be in their fifties.

The local public prosecutor’s office confirmed that an investigation has been launched and remains ongoing.
