Polish president says the Left ‘cannot come to terms with democracy’

Polish President Andrzej Duda, who will be stepping down from his role on Aug. 6, took aim at the left for their take on a lack of democracy in Poland, saying they always claim democracy does not exist when Poles choose a candidate other than their own.

“There is a group of politicians in Poland who simply cannot come to terms with democracy. They have a serious problem coming to terms with democracy. That is, they claim that there is no democracy, no matter how many times they do not win elections (because) Poles choose differently,” Duda told listeners during an interview for the wPolsce24 station, cited by Do Rzeczy.

He also noted: “I calmly and consistently tell these gentlemen first of all that it is Poles who define democracy with their votes, with their participation, and in fact, they shape this democracy and draw this democracy in this way. Thanks to this, it exists, that they go to the elections, vote, choose.”

Duda explained that the left, i.e., the current Tusk-led ruling coalition, whose candidate lost to the PiS-backed Karol Nawrocki, does not seem to understand how a democracy works. When citizens go to vote, “they assess how someone acted as the one to whom they entrusted power in the Republic of Poland. And this is characteristic of democracy and it is good that the power in Poland is changing, but they cannot accept it.”

Specifically, Duda is addressing attempts by the left to discredit the election after Nawrocki’s presidential election victory. There were calls for a recount from top politicians of the left, including the country’s top prosecutor, Adam Bodnar.

Asked about his plans after his term comes to an end next month, he said he is not ruling out further public service. “If there is such a need, I would take on some public function in the future, also as a former president of the Republic of Poland with all the consequences, taking into account also a certain political custom that has been in Poland so far, which has caused presidents not to run in any elections. But there are functions that do not require participation in general elections, and which are really very important and bear responsibility at the state level,” he said.

Poland’s president further clarified that given the right offer, he would definitely consider it. “If it is a possibility of actually seriously performing public tasks or implementing what I understand by politics as reasonable care for the common good, as action simply for the Republic of Poland and for my compatriots. Of course, I will take on such a task,” he said.
