In a recent interview with Wirtualna Polska, Law & Justice (PiS) vice president Mateusz Morawiecki announced the formation of his own association. Although he assured that it was not intended to compete with PiS, his words sparked a flurry of speculation about a supposed split within PiS.
As Wirtualna Polska reports, cited by Do Rzeczy, the former prime minister established the Rozwój Plus Association this week.
“Yes, I confirm the Rozwój Plus Association has been established. Our goal is to create additional space for dialogue, exchange of experiences, and initiating activities supporting Poland’s social and economic development,” Morawiecki told journalists.
Law and Justice (PiS) officials have made no secret of their dislike for Morawiecki’s initiative, fearing a split within the party. Party spokesman Rafał Bochenek emphasized that while PiS officials do not deny anyone the right to establish associations, “an association formed in this format would certainly be detrimental to the entire community, leading to its disintegration.”
Bochenek added that during yesterday’s meeting of the PiS Political Committee, most members expressed concern about the former prime minister’s initiative. According to the spokesman, “participation in this endeavor does not serve the good of the party.”
Meanwhile, former PiS Prime Minister Beata Szydło told Radio Zet: “First of all, there’s no ban on establishing associations, and from what I know, many of our colleagues and PiS members are either members of various associations or collaborate with them. It’s natural.”
She added that she sees nothing wrong with PiS politicians engaging in various activities, but stated that “these activities must be consistent with and support our political work, not be in opposition.”
Szydło also added that she does not believe Morawiecki has any intention of leaving the party. “I’ve spoken with Mateusz Morawiecki several times recently, and I don’t think he has any plans to leave PiS. I don’t see any reason at this point to expel him from PiS,” she said.
