Hammer Gang MEP wants Antifa co-perpetrator in violent 2023 Budapest attacks released from Hungarian prison

Italian MEP Ilaria Salis, of the Green and Left Alliance, hopes that her co-perpetrator in the 2023 violent Hammer Gang attacks in Budapest will be released from her eight-year sentence under a Péter Magyar government. German national Maja T., a convicted far-left extremist, was handed down the sentence by a first-instance Budapest court early this past February.

As to herself, Salis was granted immunity as an MEP, which many critics say allowed her to escape being tried for the brutal and heinous attacks in Budapest, that left victims with crippling injuries.

“A thought of solidarity for Maja T., still in prison in Budapest. I hope that, with the change of government in Hungary, the vendetta against anti-fascists will end, restoring full centrality to the rule of law and respect for democratic and procedural guarantees, as well as the fundamental rights of all prisoners. We will continue to fight for this,” she posted on Facebook after the Tisza Party’s election victory.

The attacks shocked Hungary, with one particularly brutal assault captured on surveillance video.

Salis also expects that the judicial purge promised by Magyar will have a positive impact on the proceedings against her, which had to be suspended due to her immunity.

Ilaria Salis and Maja T. were both members of the far-left criminal organization Hammerbande (“Hammer Gang”) that attacked eight passersby in four locations in Budapest, brutally beating them, leaving some seriously injured. The victims were randomly selected based on their clothing. All of them were targeted for their camouflage clothes, black boots and jackets, with the gang erroneously assuming they were part of a fascist demonstration.

Among the weapons used were plastic-covered hammers, lead-lined rubber gloves, a Viper, and gas spray. Several of them have already been brought to trial, including Maja T. The transnational network of far-left extremists has also been tried for similar crimes in Germany.

Later, more attackers were identified, including the now convicted Maja T. The prosecution charged her with attempted assault causing life-threatening bodily harm within a criminal organization and attempted aggravated assault within a criminal organization for nefarious reasons. A top German court had ruled that as a non-binary person would not be treated fairly in a Hungarian prison and should not have been extradited.

Several other members of the notorious far-left gang have been convicted or are facing trial for their involvement in the attacks.

Ilaria Salis hopes not only for her accomplice to be released, but also for the criminal proceedings against her to be reviewed, she wrote in another post. Salis is confident that she has a good chance of doing so after the judicial purge announced by Péter Magyar. In her post, she specifically stated that the departure of the judges Magyar wants to remove could have a positive impact on the proceedings.

In October 2025, the European Parliament voted on the immunity of both Péter Magyar and Ilaria Salis, who were suspected of theft, but neither lost their immunity.
