Labor MPs have celebrated giving $4 million in taxpayer funds to an African Village initiative in Brisbane, while Aussies battle a cost-of-living crisis and looming recession.
Egyptian Muslim immigrant Minister for Multicultural Affairs Dr Anne Aly shared a video of herself with Member for Moreton Julie-Ann Campbell and members of the Queensland African Communities Council (QACC) at their community centre in Moorooka on Thursday.
The Albanese government last year announced $20 million in funding for “African Australian communities” to be delivered over four years from 2025-26, of which one-fifth was earmarked for the QACC’s African Village hubs in Moorooka, Geebung and Redbank Plains.
The initiative provides a “safe place” where “at risk” African youths can be supported, the government said at the time, and described it as “successful” and “nation-leading”.
In her video about the funding Dr Anne Aly praised QACC President Beny Bol, a youth worker and African community leader who last year admitted visiting the Sudanese refugee murderer of grandmother Vyleen White in the hopes of rehabilitating him.
“I am here with the member for Moreton, my dear friend, my sister, Julie-Ann Campbell, and with the man, the legend himself, Beny Bol, who runs this amazing amazing centre called the African Village. Julie-Ann, tell us all about it girl,” she said.
“It is the absolute hub of the Moorooka community, it is so special, everyone you see around here, these are the people who make our community tick, and Beny Bol does a wonderful job at it too,” Ms Campbell said.
“I’m so proud to be part of a federal Labor government that’s made a $4 million investment into African Villages.”
Mr Bol then told Dr Aly the funding was a “significant investment” that was helping the African Village hubs stay open seven days a week.
“So when you come to our African Villages, you’ll find someone helping you, you come on Sunday, you come on Saturday, you come after hours, there’s always someone, and that is so unique and special,” he said.
“There you have it – unique, special, a real source of pride for this community, a place for this community to come together,” Dr Aly said, before the group broke into song and dance.
Dr Aly’s video was heavily criticised by many Aussies on social media, who said multiculturalism had failed and that immigrant groups shouldn’t get taxpayer funds.
“You can’t make this up. Labor is proud that they’re spending $4 million dollars of taxpayer’s money on an ‘African Village’ while Australians are living in their cars. How tone deaf can you be right now?” asked the author of a post about the funding on X.
“Four million dollars? Why are we making villages in Australia? Integrate and live as one. This sort of thing is divisive!” wrote one woman on Facebook.
“It’s amazing, they are from the same continent but can’t be multicultural together in their own countries. They have to come to a Western country and become multicultural there. Something is rather odd here,” a second commenter remarked.
“What about White South African farmers?” asked another Aussie.
“Labor spending millions on minorities again. Your focus should solely by on housing, stopping that idiot Chris Bowen from destroying the nation further with his incompetent agenda, and restarting our oil drilling a refining,” another said.
