Mayor of Saint-Denis removes photo of Macron, traditionally on display, says he will return it when a far-left president is in power

Bagayoko has struck again, this time at France’s centrist president, Emanuel Macron, who loves to see himself as a unifier and representative of the masses, much to the chagrin of those on the right, who have continuously felt he has sacrificed the ideals of La République on the mantle of wokeism.

Besides complaints that L’Élysée has long ignored the massive issue of crimes perpetrated by foreigners, including those under OQTFs (deportation orders), there was that 2024 Paris Summer Olympics opening ceremony, an ode to anything woke that left many either horrified or simply scratching their heads.

But for all his attempts to appease the left wing, Macron has now found himself in the crosshairs of the newly elected far-left mayor of multicultural Saint-Denis, Bally Bagayoko.

The mayor has become a far-left celebrity in France, with some even preferring him to run in the 2027 presidential election, representing La France Insoumise, instead of its leader Jean-Luc Mélenchon, who has indeed announced himself as the official candidate.

But Bagayoko caused waves after his election when he immediately called for police to be disarmed, effectively telling those who are not on board with his agenda to leave. Already, one local councilwoman has resigned after seeing the new mayor conversing with the man whom she says organized an attack on her.

Then there was the illegal rap video-turned riot he was in the middle of, at the end of which Bagayoko seemed to question why the police ever intervened at all.

Most recently, the Frontieres portal has come forward with further allegations regarding the mayor’s connection to local drug dealers. They also posted a video from 2020, allegedly showing Bagayoko as part of a mass intrusion on a city council meeting, where he was up front, yelling aggressively. One member of the hoarde actually pulled out a knife.

Then-Socialist mayor, Mathieu Hanotin, described it as “an attack against republican institutions.”

Bagayoko has called the reporting by Frontieres racist. Meanwhile, in his latest move, he has decided to take aim directly at President Macron by, according to one account, removing the photo of the president from its normal place at the town hall, while other accounts say he not only put it in a less visible corner somewhere but also turned it upside down in a show of utter disrespect.

According to CNews, Bagayoko said the photo will remain in the corner until “the advent of a radical left and a new president.”

Another news portal had a different version of the mayor’s comments. “The portrait will remain in its place until the state fulfils its obligations under the Republican Pact, particularly toward the residents of our territory,” the mayor said, according to Caliber.

Bagayoko has reportedly called his treatment of Macron’s photo a “symbolic gesture” and said he would not restore the portrait “until the Republic eliminates inequality.”

Meanwhile, the state has not remained silent, issuing a call to Bagayoko to please respect the traditions of France:

“The prefect of Seine-Saint-Denis has taken note of the recent remarks by the Mayor of Saint-Denis, in which he announced that he had taken down the portrait of the President of the Republic in his office at the Saint-Denis town hall.

“The presence of this portrait in public buildings, and in particular town halls, is part of the republican tradition.

“The Prefect of Seine-Saint-Denis has therefore asked the Mayor of Saint-Denis today, by letter attached, to reconsider his decision and return to this republican practice.”

Unfortunately, “returning to republican practices” is clearly the furthest intention of the far-left mayor, who has called Saint-Denis the “city of Blacks,” or “la ville des Noirs,” a play on its traditional nickname of “la ville des rois,” as its Basilica served as the burial place for French kings and queens. In a recent post, he has also called on France “to wake up.”

LFI’s Mélenchon has stated: “We are destined to be a Creole nation and so much the better.” Bagayoko may not be running for president in 2027, but he is very much the driver of the campaign.
