One Nation slams Aussie bank for giving Muslims Sharia-compliant loans

One Nation has unleashed at the National Australia Bank for offering special loans for Muslim customers that are compliant with Islamic Sharia law.

NAB started offering “Islamic finance” for businesses and community organisations in 2021, and claims to be the only major bank providing the service, which replaces interest-based loans with leasing, profit-share or fee-for-service agreements to help customers get around Sharia rules on charging or paying interest.

The big four bank said last year it has seen a 28% increase in Islamic finance customers over the previous 12 months, with a 54% increase in NSW, and was named the “Best Islamic Bank in Australia” at the 2025 IFN Islamic Finance Awards and the 2025 Euromoney Islamic Finance Awards.

But One Nation hit out at NAB in a social media post on Wednesday criticising the Islamic finance products and calling the offering “wrong”.

“You might not know this, but the National Australia Bank offers Sharia-compliant loans as part of its Islamic finance service. This is wrong. We should not be looking to restructure our banking system and the services it offers to accommodate one religious group,” the party said.

“There should be a common set of rules and services for all customers. There is something about this that we do not like. It doesn’t sit well with us at all, and it should be stopped.”

The post sparked a lively discussion, with many Aussies saying they had no idea NAB was offering the service.

One Nation is now the most popular party in Australia according to three recent major polls, and leader Pauline Hanson has long been critical of Islamic immigration and Halal certification, and twice wore burqas into the Senate while calling for them to outlawed.

Late last month she told Sky News she supported banning migration from some Muslim-majority countries, and again said the burqa should be outlawed.

“If you’ve got people coming from these countries that are radical Islamists and their ideology is not compatible with our country, yes I do,” she said when asked if she wanted to ban immigration from Muslim countries.

“There’s certain countries I probably would ban them coming into Australia… and I do want to ban the burqa because it’s incompatible with our culture.”

She also led a campaign against unlabelled halal food products in 2017, and warned Australians that buying halal-certified Easter chocolates from companies such as Cadburys was “financially supporting the Islamisation of Australia”.

In the same year she questioned whether cows were being slaughtered humanely under halal certification, and the RSPCA later confirmed some abattoirs have exemptions to kill cattle and sheep without stunning them first for both halal and kosher slaughter.
