A machete-wielding African thug has been caught on camera threatening workers at a Melbourne bottle shop after they caught him stealing.
CCTV footage obtained by Noticer News shows the would-be robber entering Dan Murphy’s in Fawkner on Saturday afternoon with a hood over his head and his jumper covering most of his face.
He can then be seen waving a huge machete at cashiers and security near the checkout counters before fleeing the store after being interrupted by security.
Noticer News understands the thug was stealing vodka when security tried to stop him, and he took out a machete he had concealed in his clothing before running from the store.
A source familiar with the situation said the young staff members working at the time were terrified, and that it was the third robbery that night, but the only one involving a machete.
“This store gets robbed almost daily, sometimes multiple times a day,” they said.
“A manger got punched in the face a few months ago, unprovoked. It’s just chaos.”
The source said staff were told to keep the store open and continue trading as usual after the incident, but were too traumatised to keep working and shut the store a few hours early.
Victoria Police said they were investigating the attempted theft, no arrests have been made, and no-one was injured.
The incident is just one of many involving machetes that have shocked Melbourne since Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan banned the blades from sale last month following a fight involving alleged African gang members with machetes at Northland Shopping Centre.
On Friday Caroline Springs Square Shopping centre was thrown into lockdown after a group of teenagers were seen with machetes, and on Sunday evening a man suffered a laceration to his arm after being attacked by two machete-wielding men at a service station in Doreen.
Ms Allan announced the ban in March after series of shocking alleged machete crimes, many involving African gangs, and from September machetes will be classified as a prohibited weapon and a three-month amnesty will be put in place.
