German police are investigating four migrant teenagers after several girls were allegedly subjected to serious sexual offenses in an apartment building in Halle.
The suspected incident took place on Saturday evening in the south of Halle, in the eastern German state of Saxony-Anhalt. Police said four suspects aged between 13 and 16 had been identified as part of the investigation. According to Bild, the suspected boys are from Mali and Portugal.
Police have described the case as a “serious sexual offense” involving several girls, but said they would not release further details because of victim protection and the continuing investigation.
Two of the girls were admitted to hospital in Halle for inpatient treatment, while two others were treated as outpatients. Police said the lives of the hospitalized girls were not believed to be in danger.
Bild reported that the victims are German girls under the age of 14. Police have not publicly confirmed further personal details about the girls.
Controversially, German public news network MDR reported the incident but did not name the country of origin of the suspects.

Alexander Junghans, a police spokesman, said investigators were still working to establish the precise facts of the case. “Now it must be determined whether and how many of the victims were victims of a sexual offense,” he said.
Police said forensic examinations had already been carried out to secure evidence. “The medical examinations carried out on the girls included tests for alcohol and other substances that could potentially impair consciousness or will,” police said.
The toxicology tests mean investigators are examining whether alcohol, drugs, or so-called date rape drugs may have played a role. German media reported that forensic medicine specialists were brought into the investigation both to collect DNA evidence and to assess whether the girls had been given substances.
“The three suspects, aged 14 and 16, who are of legal age for criminal responsibility, were subsequently arrested and taken into police custody on the orders of the Halle public prosecutor’s office,” Junghans said.
A fourth suspect, aged 13, was released into the custody of his guardians because he is below the age of criminal responsibility, which in Germany is 14. Police said the youth welfare office had been informed.
Junghans said: “The criminal investigation was launched immediately and is being conducted with the highest priority.”
Stern reported that police may decide on Monday whether to seek detention orders against the three suspects who are criminally responsible.
In its statement, Saxony-Anhalt police said, “For reasons of victim protection and in consideration of the ongoing investigation, no further information can be released. We ask for your understanding.”
Just last week, Remix News reported on the rise of grooming gangs in German cities, including in Nuremberg, where foreign gangs are suspected of drugging, raping, and forcing German girls into positions as sex slaves.
