An asylum seeker who allegedly tried to rape two random women in Rotterdam was arrested after Central Shelter for Asylum Seekers employees recognized him in photos, with a boyfriend of one victim nearly dying during the first assault after being choked out. The 22-year-old suspect is also accused of attempted manslaughter following a violent night in the Rotterdam region.
The violence took place on the night of February 27 to 28, during which the arrested man is said to have tried to assault two different, randomly selected women on the street within a span of a few hours. Remix News already reported the second incident involving the attempted rape of a 19-year-old woman, but according to Dutch media outlet AD, that was not the only rape attempt that night.
The first attempt occurred around 3:00 a.m. at the Schoterboshof in Rotterdam’s Agniesebuurt. There, he supposedly first attacked a 22-year-old man who was accompanied by a 24-year-old woman.
According to the Public Prosecution Service, the suspect took the man in a rear-naked chokehold until he became unconscious, after which he kicked the victim in the face several more times. As the man lay on the ground badly injured, the aggressive individual ran after the woman and tried to pull down her pants.
When the attempt to rape her failed, he fled the scene.

A few hours later, around 5:00 a.m., the man made another attempt to assault a woman. In Schiebroek, a few kilometers away, his eye fell on a 19-year-old student walking down the street. He chased her and threatened her with a knife, telling the woman: “It’s okay if you listen to me.”
In the Secretariestraat, he clutched his arms around her neck, opened the woman’s fly, and tried to rape her. The attempt failed when a local resident, alarmed by screams, came to the rescue, allowing the man to escape once again.
Police began an investigation and determined the man had taken a train from Rotterdam Central Station after the various crimes he committed. However, in the following days he turned out to be untraceable, after which the police decided to distribute photos. After that, the man was quickly identified. Several employees of the Central Shelter for Asylum Seekers recognized a Moroccan asylum seeker and notified the police.

That same day, the suspect was taken into custody, where police learned the suspect was born in Morocco and was only in the Netherlands for a few months when he was arrested. He is considered a so-called safe lander, meaning someone who has no chance of obtaining a residence permit because the Dutch government considers Morocco a safe country.

The man was arrested inside his room on an asylum hotel boat in Hendrik-Ido-Ambacht, where the police found clothing and a backpack that had been seen on security footage during the attack.
During a first preliminary hearing of the criminal case, the Public Prosecution Service announced that the man “had been clearly identifiable” on cameras at the Rotterdam Central Station and that these sharp images had therefore led to recognition among Central Shelter for Asylum Seekers employees. The prosecutor also said that DNA from the man had been found on the cheek and clothing of the second female victim.
A psychiatric expert has now examined the suspect and says he has not diagnosed any mental disorders. However, the chance of recurrence is estimated at “moderate to high.”
The case will be heard in substance on Sept. 4, and the suspect remains behind bars in the meantime.
Another similar case rocked the Netherlands last year, involving a Nigerian migrant raping and murdering 17-year-old Lisa in Amsterdam.
In January this year, the victim of a Somali suspect stormed out of court when the attempted murder charge against the man was dropped by a Dutch court, despite the victim stating that she was strangled for several minutes by the man. The judge sentenced the man to three and a half years in prison for attempted sexual assault in the case.
