African man faces court over alleged Melbourne high school abduction

An African man has faced court accused of helping a younger teenager abduct a 17-year-old girl from outside a Melbourne high school last week.

Ayom Deng, 18, from Tarneit, faced Melbourne Magistrates Court on Wednesday after being arrested at 10am and charged with abduction, kidnapping, false imprisonment and commit indictable offence whilst on bail.

He did not apply for bail, and was remanded in custody until his next court appearance in September, the Herald Sun reported.

Deng’s lawyer told the court it was not his client’s first time behind bars, and that Deng suffered from PTSD and would be vulnerable in custody due to his appearance and age.

Police allege the schoolgirl was walking into Keysborough Secondary College’s Banksia campus on Janine Road in Springvale South at about 8.30am on Friday when she was approached by a 15-year-old male.

She was allegedly forced into a vehicle and driven 60km to a home on Jezebel Way in Tarneit in the city’s west, before officers from the Special Operations Group arrested the 15-year-old at about 12pm. The girl was taken to hospital in a stable condition.

Police allege Deng drove the vehicle, and believe that all three teenagers were known to each other.

The 15-year-old, who cannot be named due to his age, was also on bail at the time of the alleged abduction, and faced a children’s court on Saturday where he had his bail revoked until his next appearance on July 6.
