New Bill Would Prohibit ICE From Separating Parents From Children

Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-Washington) filed a bill called Orlin’s Law on Thursday to prohibit U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement from detaining or deporting immigrant parents unless they pose a public safety threat.

Jayapal named the bill after 3-year-old Orlin Hernandez Reyes, a U.S. citizen slain in March after ICE deported his mother to Honduras. Wendy Hernandez Reyes said the agency ignored her pleas to be released or removed with her son. She said that forced her to leave the boy in the care of a relative in Florida, Samuel Maldonado, who is accused of abusing and killing Orlin. Maldonado has pleaded not guilty.
