A 22-year-old Afghan national has been arrested in Germany on suspicion of a stabbing attack that left a German student of the same age dead near the University of Trier.
Witnesses contacted emergency services at around 9:55 a.m. on Wednesday after finding the injured student on Robert-Schuman-Allee, a few hundred meters from the university campus.
According to Bild, witnesses told police that the victim had been attacked by a man armed with a knife who then fled the scene.
Paramedics attempted to resuscitate the student behind a privacy screen before taking him to hospital, where he later died from his injuries.
An immediate manhunt resulted in the arrest of the Afghan suspect later that day, who was registered to be living in the city.
The motive for the attack remains unclear, and it is currently unknown whether there was any connection between the suspect and the victim.
A police spokesperson told T-Online on Thursday morning that the suspect was expected to appear before a magistrate later that day.
Several people witnessed the attack and some required support from emergency chaplains at the scene.
The University of Trier said it had learned of the student’s death with “great dismay and deep sorrow.”
“Such an event deeply shakes us as a university community. The loss of a young person leaves a painful void in our community and leaves us speechless,” the university said.
A minute’s silence was due to be held at noon on Thursday.

On the same day as the Trier attack, a 28-year-old Afghan asylum seeker was arrested at Ruhpolding train station, suspected of embarking on an indiscriminate knife rampage that was caught on camera.
Meanwhile, in Dresden, German police shot and wounded an armed Turkish national and known criminal after he opened fire on officers outside a Netto supermarket.
The man had reportedly been shouting “Allahu Akbar” in the lead-up to the attack, and several local residents had reported him to the police for erratic behavior in the days leading up to the stand-off.
