German police shot and wounded an armed Turkish national and known criminal after he opened fire on officers outside a Netto supermarket in Dresden on Wednesday morning.
Emergency services were called to the store in the Friedrichstadt district of the city at around 8:20 a.m. after witnesses reported seeing a man carrying a weapon and threatening people in the area.
According to Dresden police speaking to Bild, officers encountered 41-year-old Mehmet Ü. armed with a musket-style rifle. He allegedly fired one shot at police before officers returned fire.
The suspect was struck multiple times and taken to a hospital where he is expected to recover.
TAG24 reported that the man shouted “Allahu Akbar” before the exchange of gunfire. One construction worker told the outlet that the suspect had been making Islamic declarations before police arrived.
“He shouted ‘Allahu Akbar,’ so we ducked down and ran,” the witness said.
One local resident filmed the stand-off from their balcony window, which shows the moment police returned fire against the suspect, who continued to say “Allahu Akbar” as he lay on the ground in a pool of blood.

Residents and nearby business owners claimed the suspect had displayed threatening and erratic behavior in the weeks before the incident, including repeatedly leering through the windows of local residents’ homes and telling people he was “God’s warrior and that a curse would befall us.”
The man had also been reported to the police for regularly screaming to himself in his apartment, day and night.
According to the German press, the Turkish national had previously served a significant prison stretch for two counts of attempted murder, being sentenced to ten years in prison back in 2013.
It is unclear why he was residing in Germany given his criminal history, or whether he had been successfully naturalized.
